Message from the Director

Spring 2010

The academic year 2009-2010 has turned out to be an exceedingly important one in the MacLaurin Institute’s history. We made our transition to the Institute’s third director in its 28 years of existence; we refined our mission to emphasize the important role that Twin Cities churches and church leaders will play in our conversations and programs (as we seek to bridge church and university here in this region); and, perhaps most important, we’ve been very busy building the network that will carry out this mission at the University of Minnesota and in the Twin Cities. I’m so grateful to the hundreds and hundreds of you who have expressed enthusiasm for this important work and who have now partnered with us in it! If you’re not a partner and would like to be, please let us know.

I’m excited to announce that MacLaurin will be unrolling some of its new programming this upcoming academic year 2010-2011. We’ll be offering up to ten different Reading Groups covering various disciplines and inquiries. We’ll host an advanced seminar for academic and Christian community leaders, where we’ll begin in earnest the conversation between “church” and “university” (our seminar this year will be on the topic/theme of Secularization; details TBA). In addition to our major lecture events, we’ll also be hosting a weekly Christian Scholars Lecture Series throughout the academic year, where we’ll bring local talent to the Institute for the benefit of the broader community. Stay tuned for this venue and make sure you’re receiving our biweekly Events Update. Finally, we’ll also begin to offer a number of research and paper grants to undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring the relationship between their disciplines and the Christian tradition. I’m thrilled about these initiatives, and I hope you’ll have the opportunity to participate in them.

Thank you so much for your interest in our work and for visiting our new website. We’re eager to see this virtual space emerge as another kind of bridge, facilitating conversation and understanding between members of the church and university. Whether you’re wanting to explore the Christian faith’s vital intellectual heritage, understand its contemporary significance for academic disciples, or simply connect with others who may share your interests and questions, we hope that this site will serve you. Not only will you soon find here our library of lectures and newsletters, but you’ll encounter helpful (and opinionated) bibliographies, updates on important happenings at the University of Minnesota, and links to other important centers and institutes around the world.

Of course, websites are always works in progress, so if have suggestions on how we could make this website more useful to you, just drop us a line.
